A BOAT CAPSIZED NEAR, MANIK CHALK

Manik Chalk, Nov 15: At least 23 people drowned and another 12 were missing when an overloaded boat capsized in the Ganga near Manik Chalk on Saturday evening. The dead included men, women, and children who were returning from different places. The boat was able to carry 35 people, whereas it was carrying at least 50 people. After going about 200 meters from the river bank, it overturned at 5.30 pm. Some people were sitting on the edge of the boat, and it turned upside down, trapping some people. 
Many of them swam across the river. Twelve persons were said to be missing. The water police, the fishermen, and local youths started searching for the missing persons. Crowds of waiting relatives and other persons had gathered at the Manik Chalk ghat. It was said to be the most tragic launch disaster. The situation is normal now. Nobody sustained injuries in police action. Murshidabad S.P Deepak Adhikari said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered an investigation to look into the accident and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the dead and Rs. 60000 for seriously injured’ families.

A BOAT CAPSIZED 10 DROWN AND 15 MISSING

Malda, September 10, 2022: At least one 10 drowned and 15 others went missing after an overcrowded boat capsized at Raipur Ghat in Mahananda river in Malda. The boat was ferrying around 40 people, who were returning from a weekly hat. According to the eyewitnesses, they added that as the number of passengers on the boat was far beyond capability, within a few minutes after the boat started its journey, it capsized. Twelve persons were said to be missing. Other passengers swam across the river.
While rescue operations were delayed owing to the late arrival of rescue officials. The people who had gathered at Raipur ghat set ablaze six boats. A waiting room for passengers was also set on fire. Two police officers — Assistant Sub-Inspector Barun Tripathee and a constable — were injured as the mob pelted them with stones. To tackle the situation, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas on the agitating mob. The boatman had been arrested. Now the situation is normal.

LAUNCH CAPSIZED, AND 12 DROWNED

Hoogly, March 12, 2022: Twelve persons were feared drowned when a launch carrying 40 passengers capsized in midstream in the Hoogly river. This mishap took place at 6 p.m. The launch was reported to be overloaded. It was sailing across the river from Rajabagan ghat to Pondra ghat and unfortunately tilted and sank into the river. Twelve passengers including three women and four children drowned in the river and somehow the rest could manage to swim ashore. A rescue team could recover all the bodies. After three hours, the boat was salvaged by the river police. The boatman had been arrested later. An investigation into the mishap was started to know the real cause of the accident.
