11 KILLED AND ABOUT 1000 SICK IN A GAS LEAK INCIDENT

Andhra Pradesh, May 06: A terrible accident of gas leak from a factory took place late Thursday night at Gopalpatnam near Vizag in Andhra Pradesh. Eleven people died including a child. About 1000 people had fallen ill in the surrounding area. According to the local administration, the leak started from the factory around 3.30 am on Thursday. At that time there were only security guards in the factory. They became unconscious due to the gas leak. As a result, it was not possible to report then. After that, the gas started spreading in the locality. At around 4.30 am the residents of the surrounding area had eye irritation and shortness of breath. Consequently, many people wake up. On hearing the news, the fire brigade, ambulance and police reached the spot. A team from the National Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. Toxic Styrene gas spread over an area about three kilometres from the factory. Some of them were vomiting. Someone was fidgeting. Someone was motionless in the street. Many animals and birds had died due to gas leaks. About 250 families had been relocated from the area. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Jaganmohan Reddy showed great sympathy to those affected people of the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of the victims.
