   Defination of the “Optative Sentence”

The sentence by which we express our desires, wishes, blessings, curses, prayers, etc.  is called Optetive Sentence.

Most of the time the sentences start with “Long  / May / Wish” and there is a full stop (.) at the end of the sentence.

We can write optative sentence using three structures. The structures have been given below.

Structures of the sentences

May/+N/P+V-1+Others.

Long+V-1+N/P+Others.

Wish+N/P+Others.

Example of optative sentences following the first structure:

  1. May God bless you.
  2. May God save you.
  3. May his soul rest in peace.
  4. May their team win the match.
  5. May God break your mouth.
  6. May God ruin your business.
  7. May the captain of our team live long.
  8. May you become rich man in future.
  9. May you live happy life.
  10. May he get the job.
  11. May God give you a son.
  12. May God have mercy on the lives.
  13. May they stay here.
  14. May we lead happy journey.

2 Structure of optative sentence

  1. Long live Netaji.
  2. Long live our president.
  3. Long live our prime minister.
  4. Long live our headmaster.
Example of Optative  Sentence Using “Wish”

Wish+N/P+Others.

Sometimes the doer of the sentence is implied. Then the sentence starts with “Wish”.

  1. Wish him all the best.
  2. Wish you a happy conjugal life.
  3. Wish you good luck.
  4. Wish you a safe journey.
  5. Wish you a good result.
  6. Wish you all the best.
  7. Wish you happy birth day.
  8. Wish her good morning.
  9. Wish you have a car.
  10. I wish you be a teacher.
  11. He wishes me all success.

 

Other type of optative sentence

These types of sentences are different from the above rules. So you have to understand the meaning of the sentence whether express wishing. If the sentence expresses wishing, it will be optative sentence. There is no doubt in it.

Example:

  1. Have a nice day.
  2. Have a nice journey.
  3. Have a good day.
  4. Have a good result.
  5. Have a happy interview.
  6. All the best.
  7. Best of luck.
